Billing FAQ
How billing, upgrades, and cancellations work.
How does billing work?
You can subscribe on a monthly or annual basis. Monthly plans are billed every month on the same date. Annual plans are billed once a year at a discounted rate — roughly 30% less than paying monthly.
Your essay quota resets at the start of each billing period.
What happens when I upgrade to a higher plan?
The upgrade takes effect immediately. Stripe calculates the unused portion of your current period and credits it, then charges the prorated amount for the new plan for the remainder of the period.
For example: if you're on Starter ($9/month) and upgrade to Pro ($19/month) halfway through the month, you'll only pay around $5 extra — the difference for the remaining days.
What happens when I downgrade to a lower plan?
The downgrade takes effect immediately. The unused value from your current plan is credited to your account and applied against future invoices — so you won't be charged again until that credit is used up.
Can I switch between monthly and annual billing?
Yes. You can switch at any time from the pricing page.
Monthly → Annual: the switch takes effect immediately. You're charged the prorated annual rate, and your billing cycle resets to today.
Annual → Monthly: the switch also takes effect immediately. The unused portion of your annual payment is credited and will offset your monthly charges going forward.
What happens when I cancel?
Your subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period — you keep full access until that date. After that, your account moves to the Free plan (5 essays/month).
You can cancel at any time via the Open Billing Portal button on your billing page.
Do unused essays roll over?
No — essay quotas reset at the start of each billing period and unused essays do not carry over.
What is the Free plan?
The Free plan includes 5 essays per month and 1 assignment. No credit card required.
